At FROGS ARE GREEN, we believe that healthy frogs mean a healthy planet for all.
Frogs have been on Earth for over 200 million years. But frogs and other amphibians have been having a very tough time of it lately. Over one-third of amphibian species are threatened with extinction. This is the greatest mass extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs. Why are frogs going extinct? Here are a few reasons:
- Their homes—ponds, marshes, grasslands, woodlands, and rainforests—are disappearing because of the population explosion.
- Frogs have permeable skin (skin that “breathes”), so are extra-sensitive to human-made chemicals.
- Some amphibians have trouble surviving when new plants and animals are introduced into their habitat. For example, if fish are introduced to lakes where frogs live, these fish will then eat the tadpoles.
- Many frogs are dying of a disease caused by a fungus. Some scientists believe this fungus is spreading quickly because the earth is growing warmer.
At FROGS ARE GREEN, we hope you’ll take the leap and help save frogs. We’d love to hear from you!
